Mexican Tarragon PLANT - Mexican Marigold - Untreated & Heirloom - Perennial - Tagetes lucida

$ 9.32
Mexican Tarragon PLANT – Mexican Marigold – Untreated & Heirloom – Perennial – Tagetes lucidaAdd a sweet, anise‑like flavour to your kitchen garden with this heirloom, untreated Mexican Tarragon plant (Tagetes lucida), also known as Mexican Mint Marigold, Spanish Tarragon, or Winter Tarragon. This beautiful, hardy perennial is a fantastic substitute for French tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus), especially in hot, humid climates where French tarragon struggles.Mexican Tarragon is incredibly easy to grow, drought‑tolerant once established, and produces clusters of small, golden‑yellow flowers in late summer and autumn that attract bees and butterflies. It can be grown outdoors in warm regions or inside your home on a sunny windowsill, making it accessible to gardeners across Australia.The leaves have a rich, sweet, liquorice‑like flavour with hints of tarragon and a touch of marzipan – perfect for elevating all sorts of dishes.Uses:Culinary Herb: Use fresh or dried leaves to flavour chicken, fish, eggs, vegetables, salads, herbal butters, and cream sauces. It pairs beautifully with mushrooms, tomatoes, and beans.Herbal Tea: Steep fresh or dried leaves in hot water for a soothing, lightly sweet, anise‑flavoured tea. It is naturally caffeine‑free and traditionally used to calm the nerves and aid digestion.Vinegar & Oil Infusions: Create your own tarragon vinegar or infused oil to use in dressings and marinades.Edible Flowers: The bright yellow flowers are also edible – sprinkle them over salads or use as a colourful garnish.Natural Insect Repellent: The aromatic foliage is said to deter insects when planted near outdoor seating areas.Nutrients & Health Benefits (Traditional Use):Mexican Tarragon has been used for centuries in Mexican and Central American traditional medicine. Always do your own research before using medicinally.Digestive Aid: Traditionally used to relieve stomach aches, indigestion, bloating, gas, and diarrhoea. A cup of tarragon tea after meals is a common remedy.Calming & Sedative: Known for its mild sedative properties, it is often used to reduce anxiety, nervousness, and insomnia.Anti‑inflammatory: Contains flavonoids and other compounds that may help reduce mild inflammation throughout the body.Immune Support: In traditional use, it was given during colds and fevers for its mild diaphoretic (sweat‑inducing) and fever‑reducing effects.Antioxidant Rich: Packed with natural antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress.Note: Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before using any plant medicinally, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medication.Growing Conditions & Planting Tips (Indoors & Outdoors):Mexican Tarragon is one of the easiest herbs to grow, thriving with very little fuss.Climate: Perennial in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate regions (QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, northern WA). It tolerates light frost – the top dies back but the plant usually re‑sprouts in spring. In very cold areas, grow it in a pot and move indoors over winter.Position: Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade. More sun produces bushier growth and a stronger flavour. Indoors, place it near a north‑ or west‑facing window for at least 6 hours of light daily.Soil: Loves well‑drained, moderately rich soil. It is forgiving of poor soils but will grow more vigorously with a little compost. Raised garden beds or pots with drainage holes are perfect.Watering: Water regularly until established. Once mature, it is drought‑tolerant – allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot.Fertilising: A light application of organic compost or diluted seaweed solution once a month during the growing season is sufficient. Too much fertiliser reduces the concentration of essential oils and flavour.Pruning & Harvesting: Pinch back growing tips regularly to encourage a bushy, compact shape. Harvest leaves at any time – regular harvesting promotes new growth. Cut back flowering stems after blooming to keep the plant tidy.Flowering: Produces masses of small, bright yellow, marigold‑like flowers from late summer to autumn. These are edible and highly attractive to pollinators.Container growing: Grows beautifully in pots at least 20–30 cm deep. Use a quality potting mix and ensure good drainage.Care After Receiving Your Plant:Your Mexican Tarragon plant has been grown with love. Follow these steps for a smooth transition:Unpack immediately – Remove the plant from packaging. Check the soil; if dry, give it a light drink.Rest & recover – Place the plant in a sheltered, shaded spot out of strong wind for 2–3 days to reduce transplant shock.Slow sun introduction – Most of our plants grow in partial shade. If you plan to move it to a sunnier position, do so gradually over 5–7 days to avoid leaf burn.Transplant – Re‑pot into a larger pot (at least 20–30 cm deep) or plant directly into the ground when roots appear through the drainage holes. Space multiple plants about 30–40 cm apart.Water in well – Give it a deep, thorough watering straight after planting. Then allow the soil to dry slightly before watering again.Mulch lightly – A thin layer of sugar cane or straw mulch helps retain moisture, but keep it away from the stem.No fertiliser for 2 weeks – Let the plant settle before feeding.What You Will Receive:One young, healthy Mexican Tarragon plant in a small pot, grown untreated and naturally with love in my permaculture food forest (Pacific Haven, QLD).Shipping & Important Notes:Dispatch: We usually send plants on Mondays to ensure they arrive fresh and before the weekend.Shipping locations: Sending within Australia only, excluding Norfolk Island, NT, SA, TAS, and WA.Pickup: Available by appointment from Pacific Haven, QLD.Please Note: Do your own research before trying any new foods or herbal remedies.
